The Omega Speedmaster's collecting landscape is organized by reference numbers, and each reference marks a decision Omega made: a new case, a new movement, a new bezel, a new chapter. This guide walks the key references in chronological order, notes what changed at each step, and closes each section with the details collectors actually scrutinize when evaluating a piece. It is not exhaustive — special editions, limited runs, and regional variants are beyond its scope — but if you understand these ten references, you understand the skeleton of the entire family. A note on movements, briefly
Three manual-wind calibres carry the story. The calibre 321 (1957–1968) is the Lemania-based original: column-wheel architecture, 17 jewels, 18,000 vibrations per hour, no hacking seconds. The column wheel is the traditional, labor-intensive way to orchestrate a chronograph — a rotating pillar-wheel that sequences the start, stop, and reset functions with mechanical grace — and its presence is a large part of why cal.-321 watches command reverence. It is the movement that flew in space and landed on the Moon. Omega revived the cal. 321 in 2019 for a limited-production reissue, built with modern manufacturing but faithful to the original architecture, which tells you everything about its standing in the house's own mythology.
The calibre 861 (introduced 1968) replaced the column wheel with a cam-and-shuttle switching mechanism — a cost-effective, robust simplification that made the movement easier to produce and service without sacrificing the chronograph's core reliability. Jewel count rose from 17 to 18 in the early 1990s; beat rate is 21,600 vph with a power reserve around 48 hours; still manual-wind, still no hacking. The calibre 1861 (1996/97) is a rhodium-plated, gently facelifted 861 with a Delrin chronograph brake, while sapphire-back variants received the more decoratively finished 1863. One point of care: a handful of retailer pages misdescribe the cal. 861 as "automatic." It is strictly a manual-wind movement, as are all of these — the hand-wound ritual is part of the Speedmaster's identity, not a limitation to be corrected.
The calibre 3861 (from 2019/2021) is the modern chapter: Co-Axial escapement, silicon Si14 balance spring, antimagnetism to 15,000 gauss, METAS Master Chronometer certification to 0/+5 seconds per day, a 50-hour reserve, and — for the first time in the Speedmaster family — hacking seconds. Twenty-six jewels. With the 3861, the Moonwatch finally gained the everyday conveniences collectors had long assumed were impossible in a design lineage rooted in the 1950s, while keeping the hand-wound ritual intact. The hacking seconds alone changes how the watch is set and regulated — a small thing until you have lived without it.
1. CK 2915 "Broad Arrow" (1957–1959)
The first Speedmaster, launched in 1957, looked little like the watch it would become — in fact, it was born as a motorsport instrument, not a space watch. The case was a compact ~38mm with straight lugs, no crown guards, 19mm between the lugs, and a steel bezel whose engraved tachymeter scale was labeled "Tacho-productometer." Broad Arrow hands, an applied metal Ω logo, a stepped dial with radium lume, and a hesalite crystal completed the specification, powered by the cal. 321. The reference ran only about two years, across sub-references -1, -2, and -3, with total production estimated at fewer than 4,000 pieces — which is why the 2915 is treated as the grail of Speedmaster collecting. Every design decision the family later made can be read as an evolution of this starting point, and surviving examples in honest condition are vanishingly scarce — most have been restored, relumed, or worse at some point in their seventy-year lives.
What collectors examine: the -1 vs. -2 vs. -3 sub-reference details (dial script, bezel execution, hand variations), originality of the bezel printing, the oval-O dial script of the earliest examples, and the edge engraving on the caseback. On a 2915, each of these is a five-figure question.

2. CK 2998 (1959–1963)
The 2998 introduced the two features that define the Speedmaster's appearance today: alpha (dauphine-style) hands replaced the Broad Arrows, and the bezel became black anodized aluminum with a white tachymeter scale — early examples reading "Base 1000," later ones "Base 500." The case remained the straight-lug ~38mm form, and the cal. 321 stayed inside. Sub-references run from -1 through -62, a long span that covers meaningful internal evolution in dial printing, bezel execution, and case finishing. The 2998's place in history is secured by astronaut Wally Schirra, who wore his own CK 2998 during Mercury-Atlas 8 in October 1962, making it the first Omega wristwatch in space — a private purchase, not an issued watch, which is precisely what makes it charming. The space connection predates NASA's qualification program by three years and gives the 2998 a narrative no other reference can claim.
What collectors examine: sub-reference assignment, Base 1000 vs. Base 500 bezel correctness for the sub-reference, and overall originality of hands and dial — the 2998's long production span makes mismatched components a real risk, and the space-flight association has unfortunately made it a target for embellished storytelling.

3. ST 105.002 (1962–1963)
A short-lived, transitional reference bridging the 2998 and the 105.003. The 105.002 kept the straight-lug case and cal. 321, now paired with a black Base-500 bezel, and its dial execution sits between the two neighbors — close enough to the 2998 to confuse, distinct enough to matter. Its brief production run — roughly a year — makes it genuinely scarce, though it is often overshadowed by its famous successor. For the specialist, the 105.002 is the quiet hinge on which the early Speedmaster story turns: the last of one design logic, the first of another. It rarely headlines auctions, which is exactly why patient collectors watch for it.
What collectors examine: confirmation of the transitional 105.002 case stamping, bezel correctness, and unmolested dial and hands — originality matters disproportionately on a reference this thinly produced, since replacement parts effectively erase what makes the watch interesting.

4. ST 105.003 "Ed White" (1963/64–1969)
The last of the straight-lug Speedmasters and the last without "Professional" on the dial — the dial reads simply "Speedmaster," with a stepped profile, applied Ω, and tritium "T SWISS MADE T" at six. It retained the cal. 321 and the dot-over-ninety (DON) bezel. Its nickname comes from astronaut Ed White, who wore his 105.003 during the first American spacewalk on Gemini IV in 1965; a watch of this same family passed NASA's flight qualification for manned spaceflight on March 1, 1965 — the brutal testing program of heat, cold, shock, vibration, and vacuum that eliminated every competing brand. That qualification is the entire foundation of the "Moonwatch" identity. Dates given as c.1963/64–1969 are approximate, reflecting how Omega's production records blur across the transition. (Note: Omega's 2020 reissue housing a revived cal. 321 is a separate modern watch — do not confuse it with the vintage 105.003, and do not let anyone sell you one as the other.)
What collectors examine: dial originality above all (service dials and relumes are the classic trap on this reference), an authentic DON bezel, and the scarce solei or "soft gray" dial variants that command specialist attention and specialist pricing. Straight lugs should be straight — polished examples lose the case's crisp geometry.

5. ST 105.012 "Professional" (c.1963/64–1968)
The 105.012 is a turning point. It was the first Speedmaster to carry the word "Professional" on the dial — a quiet declaration of the NASA qualification — and the first in the new asymmetric 42mm case with lyre lugs and crown guards: the case shape the Moonwatch still wears today, more than sixty years later. Inside beat the cal. 321, under a DON bezel. Sub-references -63 through -66 mark production spans, and the supplier split between CB (Central Boîtes) and HF (Huguenin Frères) casebacks is a well-known fork among specialists — both are correct; the preference is a matter of scholarship and taste, and the debate itself is part of the reference's culture. This is the reference Buzz Aldrin wore on the lunar surface — the first watch worn on the Moon — and that provenance underwrites the reference's premium over its siblings. The c.1963/64–1968 dates are approximate. If you collect one vintage Speedmaster, most would tell you to start here — and the market has priced that advice accordingly.
What collectors examine: "Professional"-dial correctness, an authentic DON bezel, sub-reference and caseback-supplier (CB vs. HF) attribution, and case proportions unsoftened by over-polishing — the lyre lugs lose their edge quickly under the wheel, and a soft case is the most common disappointment.

6. ST 145.012 (1967–1968)
The last reference to carry the cal. 321, the 145.012 is the 105.012's closest visual sibling and is distinguished primarily by taller, larger pushers — the small tell that separates two watches most observers would call identical. Its brief run makes it relatively scarce, and it contains two of the most exotic vintage variants: the -67 "Ultraman" with its orange chronograph hand, and the -67 "Black Racing" with its unusual checkered minute track. The Ultraman nickname, for the record, is collector folklore attached to a still from a Japanese television production — but the watch itself is unambiguously real and unambiguously rare, and the orange hand is not a modification to be suspicious of but the entire point. Because the 145.012 sits at the very end of the cal. 321 era, it offers column-wheel ownership at a meaningful discount to the 105.012 — a fact the market has not fully arbitraged away.
What collectors examine: pusher originality and size (the defining detail), -67 Ultraman vs. Black Racing variant authentication — the orange hand must be original, not fitted later — and the usual vintage pillars: dial, bezel, and case.

7. ST 145.022 (1968–1978)
The longest-running reference of the vintage era and the first to carry the cal. 861, the 145.022 rewards patient study — it is really several watches under one number. The -68 sub-reference is transitional, with some examples retaining stepped dials and applied logos left over from the 321 era, making the earliest 861-powered watches visually closer to their predecessors than to what followed. The -69 — the "pre-moon" — introduced the printed Ω logo and was sold from December 1969 with a seahorse-only caseback lacking the moon inscription; its bezel evolution is the core checkpoint, running DON → misprinted DNN ("220 error," a prized anomaly born of a printing mistake) → corrected DNN ("225"). The -71 moved to a round-engraved caseback with the moon text and a DNN bezel, followed by the -74, -76, and -78. Serial-number-versus-bezel correctness is where novices get caught: a DON bezel on a late serial is a red flag, not a bonus, and the "pre-moon" designation belongs only to watches whose caseback and production date support it. Across the reference's decade-long run, dials aged into tropical and chocolate tones that now carry their own premiums — patina the factory never intended and the market now chases.
What collectors examine: DON vs. DNN bezel identification and correctness for the sub-reference and serial, stepped vs. flat dial, caseback type (pre-moon seahorse-only vs. moon-engraved), tropical or chocolate dial premiums, and correct bracelet — 1039, 1116, or 1171 depending on era.

8. ST 145.0022 (1981/82–1988)
In 1981/82 Omega renumbered the 145.022 to 145.0022, but the watch was essentially unchanged: full 42mm, cal. 861, hesalite crystal, the same honest Professional. It is a genuine full-size Speedmaster Professional — it must never be confused with the "Speedmaster Reduced" family (ref. 3510.50 and siblings), a separate, smaller automatic line with a different movement, different proportions, and a different collecting story entirely. This distinction matters because the renumbering era coincided with the Reduced's rise, and sloppy listings conflate the two to this day. The 145.0022 ran through 1988, succeeded by the 3590.50 (1988–96), among the last of the cal. 861 era. Note also the Apollo XI 20th Anniversary edition of this period — a commemorative release worth knowing as context for the era's special editions, though published piece counts for it remain unverified and should be treated with skepticism wherever they appear.
What collectors examine: confirmation it is a full-size 42mm cal. 861 Professional (not a Reduced — check the case size and movement, not the listing title), dial and bezel originality, and correct bracelet for the period.
9. ST 3570.50 (1996–2014)
The 3570.50 brought the cal. 1861 and a solid caseback (stamped ST 145.0022 inside, a quiet nod to its lineage). Its defining transition is in lume: tritium ("T Swiss Made T") gave way to Luminova ("Swiss Made") around 1997, and the 1996–97 "transitional" pieces — serial, movement, and dial combinations straddling the change — are actively collected as their own sub-category, with premiums for coherent, verifiable examples. The hesalite crystal and 42mm case carried the Moonwatch's traditional specification forward into the modern era, and the reference's eighteen-year run makes it the accessible entry point to the family — the one most collectors actually start with, and the one most likely to be found with box and papers intact. Within its long production, details drifted: bracelet generations, clasp styles, and dial printing all offer threads for the specialist to pull, and the earliest tritium-dial examples have begun developing the patina that vintage collectors prize. It is also the reference against which the current generation is measured — every heritage detail the 3861 restored is a detail the late 3570.50 had softened.
What collectors examine: transitional (tritium-to-Luminova) status and internal consistency, tritium patina quality, correct bracelet generation, and serial numbers matching across case, movement, box, and papers.
10. Caliber 3861 generation (January 2021–present)
The current Moonwatch generation pairs the cal. 3861's Master Chronometer certification with a deliberate restoration of heritage details the 3570.50 era had softened: an applied Ω logo, a stepped dial, and a DON bezel — the first time in decades a standard-production Moonwatch wore the dot over the ninety. Two references cover the traditional choice: 310.30.42.50.01.001 — Hesalite crystal, solid caseback with the Seahorse medallion — and 310.30.42.50.01.002 — the Sapphire Sandwich, with an exhibition back revealing the 3861's Geneva-wave finishing and its silicon balance at work. Practical upgrades include the comfort-adjustment clasp and a five-year warranty, both meaningful improvements over the outgoing generation. For the purist, the hesalite reference is the philosophical heir of the 145.022; for the movement admirer, the sapphire back finally lets the owner see what the engineers did. The choice between them is the closest thing the modern lineup offers to a personality test.
What collectors examine: hesalite vs. sapphire preference (and the differing casebacks each choice entails), clasp function, and warranty/packaging completeness. Early-production examples from the January 2021 launch window carry mild interest for completists.
How to use this guide
Read chronologically once, then use it as a checkpoint list when a specific watch crosses your path: identify the reference, confirm which sub-reference and transition window it falls in, then run the checkpoints at the end of its section — movement, dial, bezel, caseback, and bracelet — before anything else. The market rewards originality and correctness of the details above, not polish; a sharp, honest watch almost always outranks a pretty, wrong one. For anything beyond these core references — limited editions, Alaska projects, Mitsukoshi dials — start with the reference tables and auction archives linked below, and always verify against multiple sources. Dates marked approximate are approximate for a reason: Omega's production records of the 1960s do not resolve to the month, and any dealer who tells you otherwise is selling something. When in doubt, slow down — the watch will still be there tomorrow, and the knowledge will serve you longer than the impulse.
