The unglamorous half of the hobby
The hunt gets the headlines. The photographs, the reference research, the moment a long-sought serial number appears in a listing — this is the part of watch collecting that rewards obsession. But ownership, whether of a freshly delivered Moonwatch or a forty-year-old 145.022, is mostly maintenance: intervals, gaskets, polish cloths, and the quiet discipline of vetting sellers before money changes hands.
This instalment of the series covers that half of the hobby. Part one is servicing — what Omega actually recommends, what it costs, and why a vintage reference demands extra care before it ever enters the manufacturer's workshops. Part two is hesalite care, the one crystal in the Speedmaster line that actively wants your attention. Then the red-flag checklist for buyers, and finally the safe practices — escrow, inspection windows, due-diligence guidelines, and the questions every seller should be asked before you commit.
1. Servicing: intervals, costs, and the vintage warning
How often does a Speedmaster need a service?
Omega's official guidance is a range rather than a rule. The company's customer-service FAQ recommends a complete service every five to eight years, depending on how the watch is used and the environment it lives in — a watch worn daily in heat and humidity is worked harder than one rotated through a collection. Omega also recommends checking water resistance once a year, which is a small, separate intervention worth scheduling alongside a battery change for any quartz pieces in the same drawer.
Community consensus lands in the same territory, with finer-grained nuance from people who actually open the watches. Fratello's advice sits at roughly seven years, tightened for daily-wear pieces and relaxed for "safe queens" that spend most of their lives unwound. On Omega Forums, the watchmaker who posts as "Archer" — an Omega-qualified independent — places the interval at six to eight years. These are refinements of the same principle, not disagreements: modern synthetic lubricants last, but gaskets age and chronograph mechanisms accumulate wear, and a decade without attention is asking a mechanical object to do something mechanical objects cannot do indefinitely.
One point deserves emphasis because it runs counter to instinct: with Omega's own service network, there is no financial benefit to servicing early. Omega charges a flat fee for a complete service regardless of when the watch last went in, so sending a watch in at year four out of anxiety saves nothing. As Archer has noted on Omega Forums, the money is the same whether the movement is five years overdue or serviced a year early.
That logic inverts with independent watchmakers. Most independents price labour separately from parts, so a movement left until it is grinding itself down can cost more than one serviced on schedule — worn parts get replaced at your expense. Delaying a service at Omega is free; delaying one with an independent can compound.
What are the signs a service is due?
Waiting for symptoms is not the strategy, but knowing the symptoms is still useful. Bob's Watches, in their Speedmaster care guide, lists the practical tells: the watch gaining or losing time beyond its normal rate, moisture visible under the crystal (treat this as urgent — water inside a case is an emergency, not an inconvenience), a crown that has gone stiff or gritty in operation, and power-reserve problems, where the watch runs down faster than its rated reserve. Any of these is a signal to stop wearing the watch and get it to a watchmaker. Continuing to run a dry or damaged movement does not buy you time; it buys you a larger parts bill.
What does a service cost?
Here, candour is required: no verified current (2026) USD service price from Omega could be confirmed in the course of this series' research. The figures below are published reference points with their sources and dates, and they should be read as orientation, not quotations. Prices vary by region, by provider, and over time — always confirm before committing.
- Omega, Europe: approximately €950 for steel references and €1,150 for gold and platinum pieces, per Fratello citing Omega's published price list (circa October 2024).
- Omega, United States: just under $800, per a first-person account on Hodinkee (circa January 2024).
- Omega, United States (detail): $750 last checked, inclusive of replacement hands, pushers, crystal, crown, and inner parts — dial and bracelet extra — per an Omega Forums thread (May 2023).
- Independent watchmaker: roughly €400 for a full overhaul with a new mainspring and gaskets, per Fratello (older figure); US independents quoted at $275–$350 for a chronograph clean-oil-adjust with no restoration work, per Omega Forums (older figure).
Two structural observations follow from these numbers. First, Omega's flat fee includes replaced consumable parts — hands, pushers, crystal, crown — which is generous on a modern watch and potentially alarming on a vintage one (more below). Second, turnaround through Omega's service centres can be long; collectors routinely report waits measured in months, not weeks. An independent is typically faster and cheaper, but you trade away Omega's 24-month service warranty — which, per the official FAQ, applies to every Omega-authorised service and is voided the moment anyone unauthorised works on the watch. That warranty, and the flat-fee parts inclusion, is what the premium buys.
A note on calibre: 321 vs 861/1861 vs 3861
Service difficulty is not the same across the family. The calibre 861 and its 1861 facelift are straightforward, well-documented movements with widely available parts — any competent chronograph watchmaker can service them, which is part of why the 145.022 and 3570.50 are such practical vintage buys. The calibre 321 is a different proposition: a column-wheel movement out of production for decades, with scarcer parts and fewer watchmakers who know it intimately — budget more, wait longer, and choose the watchmaker on 321 experience specifically. The modern calibre 3861 adds a Co-Axial escapement and silicon components; for those, Omega's own service network is the conservative choice, since independents may lack Co-Axial-specific training and parts access.
The vintage warning
This is the most important paragraph in the servicing section, and it concerns the watches this series is largely about.
Sending a vintage Speedmaster to Omega carries a specific, documented risk: the service centre's default posture is restoration to current specification. Dial, hands, bezel, and crystal that you consider original patina, Omega's technicians may consider worn consumables — and the flat fee, remember, includes replacing them. A service that returns your watch running beautifully but fitted with a modern service dial, modern hands, and a modern bezel insert has, in collector terms, diminished the watch even as it repaired it. The tritium-era lume you paid a premium for is gone; the dial printing that collectors loupe over is new.
The defence is paperwork, stated explicitly and in writing. Fratello's advice: ask the Omega boutique for the special service form that lets you indicate exactly which components are to be left untouched — dial, hands, bezel, crystal, crown — and have it recorded before the watch leaves your sight. Do not rely on a verbal understanding with the person behind the counter. If your watchmaker is an independent rather than Omega, the same principle applies with even more force: specify in writing what must not be polished, replaced, or "improved," because a well-meaning independent's idea of a thorough job and a collector's idea of originality are not the same idea.
2. Hesalite care: living with acrylic
Hesalite is Omega's trade name for the acrylic crystal fitted to the classic Moonwatch — the vintage references and the modern hesalite model (310.30.42.50.01.001), the one with the solid caseback and the crystal that sits slightly proud of the bezel. (The sapphire-sandwich .002 wears sapphire instead, and needs none of this.) (A word on why it exists at all: collector lore holds that NASA preferred a plastic crystal because glass shards would float dangerously in zero gravity. It is a good story, and it may even be true, but it has never been officially cited by NASA — treat it as lore, not history.)
Acrylic behaves differently from sapphire, and the differences cut both ways. It scratches far more easily than sapphire — a shirt cuff, a desk edge, a moment's inattention — but where sapphire tends to chip or shatter under impact, hesalite cracks, and most damage it suffers is superficial. The decisive advantage: scratches in acrylic can be buffed out at home. Scratches in sapphire cannot, at least not by you.
For light scratches, the community standard is Polywatch or an equivalent acrylic polish. The method is unglamorous and effective: a small amount of polish, firm pressure with a soft cloth, two to three minutes of work, and repeat for deeper marks. Deeper scratches can, per community wisdom, be wet-sanded — "to a point," after which you are thinning the crystal rather than improving it. For everyday care, a clean microfibre cloth suffices; a damp cloth with mild soap handles stubborn marks, with attention to the crevices around the bezel where moisture collects.
Two cautions. First, resist the urge to polish out every scratch the moment it appears. Collector wisdom is to wait until the crystal is genuinely heavily scratched and do one proper session rather than a dozen anxious ones — each polishing removes material, and hesalite is not infinite. Second, never use an abrasive polish on a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating: you will strip the AR coating long before you improve the sapphire, and the result is worse than the scratch you started with.
When the crystal is beyond buffing — cracked, deeply gouged, crazed — replacement is straightforward. Omega has quoted around €230 including a partial service for a hesalite replacement, though that figure dates to 2021 and should be treated as dated; independents do the job for less. It is one of the cheaper interventions in Speedmaster ownership, which is part of the point: the hesalite crystal is a consumable by design, and treating it as one removes the anxiety that makes people afraid to actually wear the watch.
3. The red-flag checklist
The pre-owned Speedmaster market rewards knowledge and punishes haste. The following six checks are the ones experienced buyers run — in rough order of how completely each can ruin your day.
(1) The frankenwatch
A frankenwatch is a watch assembled from mismatched or incorrect-period parts and presented — sometimes innocently, sometimes not — as an original example of a reference. The hobby's defining cautionary case is the $3.4 million Phillips Geneva 2915-1 that Omega itself exposed as assembled from wrong parts. The principle it established holds at every price: if a seven-figure lot vetted by experts can turn out to be a frankenwatch, no listing is safe on reputation alone.
eBay's vintage watch market is described by experienced dealers as awash with frankens — watches with a dial from one reference, hands from another, a movement that never belonged in that case. The defence is reference literacy: knowing, for the reference you are buying, which dial variants, hand sets, bezels, crowns, and movements are correct, and in which serial ranges. This is slow knowledge, built from reference books and forum archives, and there is no shortcut. Buy the knowledge before you buy the watch.
(2) Over-polishing
A case can only be polished so many times before the geometry is gone. Over-polished Speedmasters show lugs that have lost their sharp lines and chamfers, case flanks gone soft and uneven, and engravings — caseback seahorses, reference numbers between the lugs — rendered shallow and blurry. It reduces value significantly, and unlike a replaced crystal, it cannot be undone.
Learn what crisp Speedmaster lugs look like — the bevels on a 145.022, the twisted lugs of the 105.012 — and compare every candidate against that standard. When in doubt, ask the seller directly whether the case has been polished, and treat evasive answers as answers.
(3) Replaced parts
Service dials, service hands, service bezels, replacement crowns and pushers: each is legitimate maintenance in isolation and each reduces a vintage watch's originality — and value — when undisclosed. Ask explicitly what is original and what has been replaced, component by component: dial, hands, bezel, crown, pushers, crystal, movement parts.
One quick tell: mismatched lume colour between the dial and the hands suggests one of them has been replaced, since original dial and hands aged together under the same conditions. Perfectly matched, evenly aged lume across dial and hands is what originality looks like; a dial glowing cream while the hands glow white — or vice versa — is a question the seller needs to answer.
Reference-specific version of this check: on a 145.022-69, the bezel is the whole game — an original DON (dot-over-90) bezel is correct, while the later DNN "225" bezel on a -69 is almost always a service swap and is priced accordingly. On 145.022-69s and earlier references, the stepped dial is equally load-bearing: a flat service dial in a watch that left the factory with a step dial is a significant originality deduction. Learn the two or three checkpoints that matter for the exact reference you are hunting before you learn anything else.
(4) The re-dial
A re-dial — a dial that has been stripped and reprinted — is among the most value-destructive things that can happen to a vintage watch, because the dial is the face the collector is paying for. The tells, per the redial-spotting guides collectors actually use:
- Printing that sits crooked, with wrong fonts, wrong letter spacing, or minute tracks that lack crispness.
- Under a loupe, original dial printing shows slightly raised ink — a perceptible "hump" where the ink sits on the surface. Redials print flat.
- The "Swiss Made" (or "Swiss" / "T Swiss Made T") designation at 6 o'clock: missing, sloppy, or wrongly proportioned on redials.
- Finish wrong for the reference — too glossy where the original was matte, or vice versa.
- Under magnification, orange-peel texture or oxidation visible beneath the new paint — the old dial showing through the new work.
- And the simplest tell of all: a supposedly vintage dial that looks completely new. Decades leave traces. A dial that looks as though it left the factory last Tuesday, on a watch allegedly from 1968, is not a miracle of preservation. It is a redial.
(5) Re-lumed hands and dials
Lume is a clock as well as a material. Tritium, used until the mid-1990s, barely glows today — its half-life saw to that. So a watch described as a 1960s example that glows brightly under UV light is not showing off miraculous original lume; it is showing modern Super-LumiNova, and the lume work has been redone.
Original aged tritium has a recognisable character: uneven creamy, yellow, or "pumpkin" patina, with a dry, chalky texture. Faked patina tends toward uniformity — too even, too consistent across all markers. Factory lume application was precisely contained within the markers; sloppy edges, blobs, or lume creeping past marker boundaries indicate a relume. And as with replaced parts generally, dial and hand lume should match in colour and character — they aged together.
A relume is not automatically a dealbreaker the way a redial often is — hands, in particular, are frequently relumed during service — but it is a fact that must be disclosed and priced accordingly, not discovered later.
(6) Serial and identity mismatch
Every Speedmaster carries a serial number, and that number must agree with the reference and the paperwork. Omega's Extract of the Archives service confirms the movement's manufacture date, the model it was fitted to, and the date of sale — a modestly priced document that lets you cross-check a seller's story against the manufacturer's own records. Use it, particularly for anything expensive or anything whose reference-to-serial pairing you cannot verify yourself.
4. Safe buying practices — and what to ask sellers
Knowledge of red flags is defence; process is defence in depth. The mechanisms below are how experienced buyers structure transactions so that a mistake becomes recoverable.
On eBay: listings over $2,000 in the US fall under eBay's Authenticity Guarantee — the watch is routed to a third-party inspector (such as Stoll & Co.) before it reaches you. Understand exactly what this covers: it authenticates the watch. It does not warrant accuracy of the description beyond authenticity, and it is not a service guarantee. For high-value purchases over $10,000, escrow through a service like Escrow.com — with its standard seven-day buyer inspection period — puts a neutral third party between your money and the seller until you have had the watch in hand.
On Chrono24: use the platform's Trusted Checkout — your payment is held in escrow until you receive and accept the watch, with an inspection window and a money-back guarantee if the watch is not as described. Due diligence, per The Watch Register's published guidelines (2023): verify the seller's identity — anonymity is itself a red flag. Record the provenance as stated. Verify the authenticity of the watch and all its parts, including the movement — not just the reference on the dial. Run the serial number against The Watch Register's stolen and lost database, in your own name. And pay by bank transfer, not cash, after your checks have cleared — a paper trail protects both parties.
What to request from every seller, before money moves:
- Sharp, multi-angle photographs: dial, hands, case, lugs, caseback, crown, bracelet and clasp, movement, and any papers — with the serial number legible.
- Reference and serial numbers, with the serial matched against the papers.
- Service history with paperwork — and whether any original parts were replaced during service.
- An explicit original-versus-replaced statement, component by component (dial, hands, bezel, crown, pushers, crystal, movement parts), and whether the case has been polished.
- Reference-specific questions: for a 145.022-69, is the bezel the original DON? For a 3570.50, is it a 1996–97 transitional (tritium dial), and does the movement match? For any calibre-321 watch, who last serviced the movement — and do they have 321 experience?
- Box, papers, and accessories included in the sale.
- Provenance: where the seller got it, and how long they have owned it.
- The seller's reviews and a written return policy, stated before purchase — not negotiated after a problem.
- And a budget line of your own: if no service is documented, assume the watch needs one, and price that into your offer.
The long view
A Speedmaster is a durable object surrounded by a fragile market. The object itself — the calibre 861 and its descendants, the hesalite crystal, the twisted lugs — was built to be serviced, worn, scratched, and serviced again; it asks only for competent hands every several years and a polywatch cloth in between. The market around it asks for more: scepticism, documentation, escrow, and the willingness to walk away from a watch you have already fallen for when the serial number does not add up.
Get the maintenance right and the watch outlives you. Get the buying right and you never pay tuition to the frankenwatch market. Neither requires genius — only patience, paperwork, and the discipline to check before you commit.
