On March 1, 1965, a letter left NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston with a plain declaration: the Omega Speedmaster was "Flight Qualified for All Manned Space Missions." It is a sentence of bureaucratic prose that decided the watch's fate. Up to that point, the Speedmaster was a well-made professional chronograph with a small but loyal following. After it, the watch became the Moonwatch — the first and still only wristwatch NASA has qualified for spaceflight, and by some accounts for extravehicular activity, which is to say for the vacuum beyond the airlock. Everything the Speedmaster is today — every reference number, every re-edition, every Tuesday hashtag — traces back to the testing room in Houston where two rivals failed and one did not.

A chronograph built by Lemania hands

The engine at the heart of the early Speedmaster was the calibre 321, a hand-wound column-wheel chronograph designed by Albert Piguet. Piguet worked for Lemania, the movement house that SSIH — Omega's parent company — had acquired in 1932, effectively making him an in-house talent before the phrase existed. The exact date of the calibre's design is one of those facts collectors still debate; the commonly cited range is 1942 to 1946. What is not disputed is the architecture: a classic column-wheel layout with a Breguet overcoil, the kind of construction that gives a chronograph pusher its crisp, mechanical feel and that makes the calibre a darling of watchmakers to this day.

Omega put the movement to work in 1957 as the heart of the reference CK 2915, launched alongside the Seamaster 300 and the Railmaster as a trio of professional instruments. The Speedmaster was aimed at racing drivers and sportsmen, not astronauts. Yet its design already contained the DNA collectors obsess over: the tachymeter scale moved off the dial and onto a steel bezel (a move Hodinkee has credited as the first instance of an external tachymeter bezel on a production chronograph, though it rests on that single-source claim), Broad Arrow hands, a case of roughly 38 millimetres with straight lugs, and a dial legible at a glance. The creation was a team effort — product manager Pierre Moinat leading, case design by Claude Baillod, the prototype by George Hartmann — and it established the template that has barely deviated in seventy years.

The following years added the details that built the family. In 1958 the caseback gained the hippocampus, Omega's seahorse, engraved by Jean-Pierre Borle after a figure of Neptune he had seen in Venice. In 1959 the reference CK 2998 swapped the steel bezel for black aluminum and the Broad Arrow hands for slimmer alpha hands. The lineage then moved through the ST 105.002 of 1963, the ST 105.003 of 1964 — with straight lugs and baton hands, and the reference that would matter most to NASA — and the ST 105.012 of 1964/65, the first to carry the word "Professional" on the dial and the first in the asymmetric case with its twisted lyre lugs and crown guards.

NASA goes shopping

By 1964, astronauts were asking for a proper flight watch — a reliable chronograph that could back up the spacecraft's own timers. NASA Operations Director Deke Slayton put out the word to several manufacturers, and the certification fell to a young engineer named James "Jim" Ragan. The procedure was brutal: eleven environmental tests designed to reproduce the worst that spaceflight could inflict. Extreme heat and cold, rapid temperature cycling, humidity, a pure-oxygen atmosphere, 40g shocks, sustained acceleration, decompression, high pressure, vibration, and 130 decibels of acoustic noise.

Three watches entered the chamber. Alongside the Omega Speedmaster ST 105.003 stood a Longines-Wittnauer 235T and a Rolex reference 6238. Two of them did not survive the gauntlet. Ragan later recalled, in an oral history carried by PopSci, that "The Rolex and Longines basically crapped out on the first test. We did 11 environmental tests, and I just had to hope the Omega made it through the rest. It did, and the astronauts preferred the Omega, too." The Speedmaster came through all eleven. Ragan would later say, in Swatch Group's 40th-anniversary brochure from 2009, that "To the best of my knowledge, the Speedmaster is the only piece of hardware which was used from the very beginning without any modification."

There is a persistent anecdote that Omega itself was surprised to learn the watch had been tested at all — that the company supposedly discovered its chronograph had gone through NASA's gauntlet only afterward. Treat that story with care; it appears in several tellings and is likely embellished in the retelling. What the record supports is simpler and more impressive: an off-the-shelf chronograph, built for motorsport timing, endured everything NASA could throw at it without a single modification.

Flight qualified

March 1, 1965 made it official: the Speedmaster was flight qualified for all manned space missions. It remains the only watch NASA has qualified for extravehicular activity. Three weeks later, on March 23, Gus Grissom and John Young flew Gemini 3 — the first official flight of the qualified watch, the 105.003 that had survived NASA's trials.

The watch's most famous early moment came in June 1965 aboard Gemini 4. Ed White became the first American to walk in space, and he wore his 105.003 strapped over his suit on a long nylon strap, the chronograph readable through the mission's critical timing tasks. The "Ed White" nickname for the straight-lugged 105.003 has been with collectors ever since. Omega, not slow to recognize an opportunity, adopted the name "Speedmaster Professional" shortly thereafter.

It is worth correcting a piece of pre-history that sometimes muddies the timeline. On October 3, 1962, Wally Schirra wore his personal CK 2998 aboard Mercury-Atlas 8, making it the first Omega in space — but as a private backup to the capsule's onboard timer, not as an issued or qualified flight watch. The distinction matters to collectors: the CK 2998 was there by personal choice; the qualified era began in 1965.

The Moon years

The calibre story turned a page in 1968. The 321, beautiful but costly to make, was replaced by the calibre 861 — a cam-controlled movement that was cheaper to produce and, in the field, every bit as robust. The reference 145.022 was the first Speedmaster to carry the 861, and it opened the line of 42-millimetre professional references that continues today: a lineage that deserves precision, because these are genuine Speedmaster Professionals — the 145.022, the later 145.0022, the 345.0022, the 3590.50, and the 3570.50 — and none of them should be confused with the Speedmaster Reduced, the separate automatic family built around the 3510.50.

The 145.022 was on wrists when history arrived. In July 1969, Apollo 11 carried two Speedmasters to the Moon. Neil Armstrong left his in the lunar module as a backup timer after the module's electronic timer malfunctioned; Buzz Aldrin wore his on the surface, making it the first wristwatch worn on the Moon. Which exact reference Aldrin wore is a point collectors still debate; it is conventionally identified as belonging to the 105.012/145.012 family, and that phrasing is as far as the evidence comfortably goes.

The honors followed quickly. On November 25, 1969, at an astronaut dinner in Houston, Omega presented gold BA 145.022 Speedmasters to the Apollo 11 crew and others, the casebacks engraved "To mark man's conquest of space with time, through time, on time." A total of 1,014 pieces were produced between 1969 and 1973, though the number of the first engraved presentation pieces — 28 or 32 — is disputed in the literature.

Then came the mission that sealed the legend. In April 1970, Apollo 13's oxygen tank exploded en route to the Moon, and the crew's survival depended on a series of precise manual burns. Jack Swigert timed the critical 14-second course-correction burn on his issued Speedmaster — one of the calibre-321 references, the 105.012/145.012 generation, that NASA had stocked for the Apollo program. The spacecraft's own timing systems were down, and a wristwatch became a life-support instrument. On October 5, 1970, NASA awarded Omega the Silver Snoopy Award, the agency's recognition for contributions to flight safety and mission success. It remains one of the few times a watchmaker has been so honored.

The program wound down with dignity: Apollo 17 in December 1972, Gene Cernan's bootprints the last on the lunar surface — Cernan wore his 105.003 on the mission, the same straight-lugged reference Omega would later use as the template for its 2019 calibre-321 revival — and the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project in July 1975, whose crews — per Omega's own timeline — all wore Speedmasters.

After Apollo: the reference chain

With the Moon landings behind it, the Speedmaster settled into the long, quiet work of becoming a classic. The professional reference chain runs in an unbroken line that any collector should be able to recite: the 145.022 with calibre 861 from 1968 to 1981; the 145.0022 from 1982 to 1988; the 3590.50, the last of the calibre 861, from 1988 to 1996; the 3570.50 with calibre 1861 from 1996 to 2014; the 311.30.42.30.01.005 from 2014 to 2021; and from 2021 the current generation, the 310.30.42.50.01.001 with hesalite crystal and the .002 sapphire sandwich, both housing the calibre 3861 — a Co-Axial Master Chronometer certified by METAS.

Along the way, the past kept returning. The calibre 321 was revived in 2019 in a re-edition of the "Ed White" 105.003, rebuilt from a painstaking reverse-engineering of the original movement. In 2012, Fratello's Robert-Jan Broer coined the hashtag #SpeedyTuesday, and what began as a collector's ritual became an official program: the Speedy Tuesday limited edition of 2017, the Ultraman of 2018, and a steady cadence of tributes since. The 2022 MoonSwatch collaboration with Swatch brought the Moonwatch's design language to a mass audience at a fraction of the price, and February 2025 saw a "1965" MoonSwatch tribute marking sixty years since flight qualification. Looking forward, April 2026 coverage reported the Artemis II crew flying Speedmaster X-33s — the digital-analog mission timer, and a sign that the family's NASA story may not be finished.

A living instrument

What endures about the Speedmaster is not romance but competence. It was not designed for space. It was a racing chronograph that happened to be built so well — legible, robust, honest in its engineering — that when NASA subjected it to eleven tortures, it simply kept running. No other watch in history can claim that record: flight qualified in 1965, worn on the first spacewalk and the first lunar landing, trusted with a crew's life on Apollo 13, and still in production, still hand-wound, still recognizably the same watch, more than sixty years on.

The Speedmaster did not become the Moonwatch because Omega willed it. It became the Moonwatch because, when it mattered, it worked.
