Four manual-wind calibres carry the Moonwatch story across sixty-plus years. The architecture changed twice — column wheel to cam, then cam to Co-Axial — but the hand-wound ritual never did. Know these four and you understand what you’re actually buying when you buy a Speedmaster.

Calibre 321 (1942–1968) — the column wheel
The Lemania-based original and the movement that flew in space and landed on the Moon. Seventeen jewels, 18,000 vibrations per hour, no hacking seconds — and a column wheel orchestrating the chronograph, the traditional, labor-intensive way: a rotating pillar-wheel sequencing start, stop, and reset with mechanical grace. Its presence is a large part of why cal.-321 watches command reverence. Omega revived the 321 in 2019 for a limited-production reissue, built with modern manufacturing but faithful to the original architecture — which tells you everything about its standing in the house’s own mythology.

Calibre 861 (1968–1996) — the workhorse
The 861 replaced the column wheel with a cam-and-shuttle switching mechanism — a cost-effective, robust simplification that made the movement easier to produce and service without sacrificing the chronograph’s core reliability. Jewel count rose from 17 to 18 in the early 1990s; beat rate is 21,600 vph with a power reserve around 48 hours. Still manual-wind, still no hacking. One point of care: a handful of retailer pages misdescribe the cal. 861 as “automatic.” It is strictly a manual-wind movement, as are all of these — the hand-wound ritual is part of the Speedmaster’s identity, not a limitation to be corrected.

Calibre 1861 (1996–2021) — the classic Moonwatch
A rhodium-plated, gently facelifted 861 with a Delrin chronograph brake; sapphire-back variants received the more decoratively finished 1863. This is the movement inside the 3570.50 — the watch most people picture when they hear “Moonwatch” — and it carried the line, essentially unchanged in character, for a quarter century.

Calibre 3861 (2021–) — the modern chapter
Co-Axial escapement, silicon Si14 balance spring, antimagnetism to 15,000 gauss, METAS Master Chronometer certification to 0/+5 seconds per day, a 50-hour reserve — and, for the first time in the Speedmaster family, hacking seconds. Twenty-six jewels. With the 3861, the Moonwatch finally gained the everyday conveniences collectors had long assumed were impossible in a design lineage rooted in the 1950s, while keeping the hand-wound ritual intact. The hacking seconds alone changes how the watch is set and regulated — a small thing until you have lived without it.

Which calibre for you?
- Buy the 321 if you want the history in its purest mechanical form — and accept that servicing a column-wheel chronograph costs accordingly, and parts demand a specialist.
- Buy the 861 if you want vintage character with workhorse practicality — the sweet spot for wearing a vintage Speedmaster regularly.
- Buy the 1861 if you want the classic Moonwatch look with modern reliability and straightforward servicing.
- Buy the 3861 if you want a daily-wear Moonwatch that keeps modern time — hacking seconds, antimagnetism, and a warranty included.
