The wrist
In Apollo 13, Hanks wears a Speedmaster as Lovell through the whole film — with a blue Lacoste polo, strapped over the spacesuit, tucked under the uniform sleeve aboard the spacecraft. Hodinkee’s watch-spotting breakdown calls it “likely the ref. 105.012 in real life,” with the honest caveat that it’s difficult to tell whether the production got the reference exactly right. The film is famously meticulous — nearly every wrist at Mission Control wears a Speedmaster — and the prop department’s instinct was correct: the 105.012 is the asymmetric-case reference NASA was issuing in the Apollo era.
Separately, Fratello documented Hanks wearing a Speedmaster Professional in his own time — not a prop, his own watch. The published photograph doesn’t allow a reference-level identification, so that one stays honestly unidentifiable.
Why it matters
This is the rare celebrity sighting where the fiction and the history reinforce each other. The real Jim Lovell’s crew timed the burn that saved Apollo 13 with their Speedmasters — the 14-second burn is the film’s centerpiece and the watch’s legend in one. Hanks wearing the right watch wasn’t product placement; it was the only choice that wouldn’t have broken the film.
