In Lucy in the Sky (2019), Jon Hamm plays astronaut Mark Goodwin — and wears the standard-issue Moonwatch, “likely with the previous generation 1861 movement,” in Hodinkee’s qualified read. The qualification is the outlet’s own word, and we carry it forward rather than upgrading it: likely, not certain.
The film’s horological headline belonged to Natalie Portman’s X-33 — the actual current-issue astronaut watch — but Hamm’s Speedmaster is the quieter, truer detail. An astronaut character in a contemporary-set film wearing the Moonwatch is exactly what the real program did for decades, and what it still does on wrists that never left the ground.
